Metro Kidz
Dallas Metro Ministries philosophy is prevention- reaching children before they quit school, join gangs, commit crimes, or become pregnant. In March of 1993 Dallas joined other cities nationwide to become the next Metro Ministry; this radical ministry was founded on the mission of reaching children and impacting their lives. Through Dallas Metro Kidz Sidewalk Sunday School we go into neighborhoods where the gospel has little voice. Using a moving truck which has been converted, we are able to minister right in the children’s own neighborhood. The truck’s side has been cut out, and folds down to form a stage. Inside the truck is everything needed to present a one hour, action packed program, which consists of games, songs, prayer, memory verses and Bible lessons. At the end of each program we give the child a “promotion,” what we use to draw the kids to the program. It is usually a snack, a drink, or sometimes a small toy. Each Saturday, Metro staff and volunteers go to each child’s house to visit them. It is a time to check on the child and his family, and pray for any needs the family might have. Each person visits the same children to establish a relationship, because relationship is key in building trust, and without trust the ministry could not operate. All week long, Dallas Metro Kidz is in multiple neighborhoods throughout Dallas, spreading the Gospel and hope through a simple program.
Metro Kidz is in its 14th year now, but the need is still here. Countless children and teenagers from all over the city have grown into adulthood on the tarps of Metro Kidz. In fact, many of the kids that once sat on our tarps now have children that attend Metro Kidz; some of the kids have now grown up become part of our staff. Dallas is a city that is hungering for change and hope. This can be found in the thousands of children who attend Metro Kidz every week. Bill Wilson who founded Metro Ministries in New York said, “It’s easier to build boys and girls, than it is to repair men and women.” We hold to that same philosophy here in Dallas.
